LinuxLinux is an open source operating system that is similar to Unix. Most muds run on a Linux server and some muds will only run on Linux such as SWLPC. It is therefore recommended that you have a Linux machine running when building a MMORPG using the mud client package. A recommended Linux distribution for newcomers to Linux is http://www.knoppix.org/. It will run SWLPC, smaugfuss, Circlemud. Knoppix allows a PC to be turned into a Linux machine without needing to install Linux since the entire operating system boots off a CD. It can also be installed onto a harddrive if you dont want to boot off a CD. If you dont have a spare PC to run Linux it is possible to run Linux and Windows on one PC using vmware. It is only recommended if you have a high specification machine since running the mud client is CPU intensive and will effect the speed of Linux on Vmware. One possibility is to develop the mud on vmware and when you want to use it with the mud client upload your mud to a live mud server and run your mud client against the live server. Some other Linux distributions to try include Redhat and Slackware. To access the harddrive on Linux from a PC (as you would need to do to run the mud mapper) you might need to run a Samba server. Knoppix has one in its distribution. |
