DSL (the itty bitty linux program)According to the instructions you posted, swlpc is opened by unpacking it, going to the directory where it's at, and typing configure then make. well i got as far as going to the folder, and a bash window opened. it didn't recognize "configure" or "make" for that matter. Tried to connect to itTried to connect to it locallly, this was the result: I double checked config.xsl and it was definitely typed in correctly, it was. My firewall was off, and even made sure that it would allow port 3302 anyway, so that wasn't the problem. I think for knoppix while inI think for knoppix while in the SWLPC directory created after unzipping you type 'bash configure' I think its different for different Linux distributions. Configure is a script in theConfigure is a script in the swlpc directory and isn't a linux command. okay, so if it doesn'tokay, so if it doesn't understand it, does that mean it still recognizes it ? and do i have to type "bash" first? Do you see the fileDo you see the file 'configure' in the swlpc directory? Sometimes you can just type 'configure' in the Linux shell (while in the swlpc directory (cd swlpc or whatever)) and it will compile while others you need to type 'bash configure'. i uninstalled (lol!!!) dsli uninstalled (lol!!!) dsl and downloaded wubi (which is very cool so far). check this out: it installs and boots up from your computer as if it were originally installed instead of windows. when you boot your computer, you can choose between loading windows or loading wubi. essentially this means you only need plenty of diskspace, but it doesn't have to share ram with windows. so far so good. this is so much better, i can hardly believe it. i'm on it right now. anyway, gonna try to download it on this linux. when on dsl, it wouldn't let me open the folder till i did the bash command thing. so this may be a size problem, i'm hoping wubi can handle it. (wubi installs ubuntu) can you save 3dclient.execan you save 3dclient.exe download that's on download.com as a file that linux can open, or will i have to still download something that can open windows .exe files? As mentioned the wizardAs mentioned the wizard client and the mud client are windows only. finally got wine to work, sofinally got wine to work, so installed it on linux. now for the next step of getting swlpc to work well i've unzipped swlpc andwell i've unzipped swlpc and am in the folder. i have the terminal open and typed configure, no luck. typed bash configure, no luck. selected configure and typed configure. no luck. this part is funny. selected makefile and typed make, it said no makefile found. Sounds like you are not inSounds like you are not in the swlpc directory. Are you familiar with the 'cd' command ? well that was interesting.well that was interesting. apparently, the fact i have a recovery console which is considered a second partition, caused the boot.ini to freak out. when i installed wubi ubuntu, it was acting like a 3rd partition and three partitions are not allowed, so saith hal.dll which proceeded to become unusable and i had to do a complete windows recovery. took five hours to get everything back and lost my nvidia video drivers as a result. wheee. :) had to redo windows service pack 2, that thing is gigantic now. anyway, didn't make any progress on building swlpc because of the crash. not sure how to keep it from doing the same thing again, so going to read up on it. You are putting Linux onto aYou are putting Linux onto a partition? Pity you couldn't get vmware working. Did you eventually try vmware workstation or did you just try the vmware server? You know another solutionYou know another solution would be to buy a wolfpaw account and run SWLPC from there over the internet. I pay $US10 per month. sounds like a good deal, sounds like a good deal, just can't do it right now. hubby was in the air force for 23 years and retired a few months ago. he's in the testing process to get in the post office and we're living on his air force retirement check, which is about one fourth of what he was making before lol. no, i didn't put it on a partition. it boots as if it were windows. i reinstalled it. got the four files (3dmudclient.exe, swlpcsourcforge, wine, and runit (runit2 wasn't available for some reason)). i unzipped swlpc, wined 3dmudclient and did cd'ed to the swlpcsourceforge folder. then i typed bash configure and bash make and bash runit.here is the results: @ubuntu:~/Desktop/swlpcsourceforge$ bash configure loading cache ./config.cache checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one @ubuntu:~/Desktop/swlpcsourceforge$ bash make /usr/bin/make: /usr/bin/make: cannot execute binary file @ubuntu:~/Desktop/swlpcsourceforge$ bash runit shat: no process killed @ubuntu:~/Desktop/swlpcsourceforge$ ./bin/shat: error while loading shared libraries: liblpvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory x kill: 53: No such process ./bin/shat: error while loading shared libraries: liblpvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory sounds like a good deal, sounds like a good deal, just can't do it right now. hubby was in the air force for 23 years and retired a few months ago. he's in the testing process to get in the post office and we're living on his air force retirement check, which is about one fourth of what he was making before lol. Skinhat>I never would have guessed you were a woman. I have never met a woman interested in computer games let alone building a computer game. I did a google for 'checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one' and found this url: http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-ports/2000-07/msg00025.php Says try ./configure --host='i686-pc-linux' Hrm, she makesHrm, she makes games http://www.caligari.com/news/news_june2006/cpcp3.html she makes games i make games (or try anyway). i'm also an avid researcher, freelance writer, been interviewed on the radio a few times and also interviewed others, although you probably wouldn't guess that with all the questions i ask. :Dhttp://www.thestargates.com/contact.html quoting a news article A recent study conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association discovered that older women play far more computer games than older men. The survey suggests that only 35% of men aged 25-34 play computer games whilst a staggering 65% of women of the same age play games. Women are more likely to play free games such as Solitaire and Minesweeper than a man and so despite having minimal representation in the worlds of PC and console gaming, in the world of the freebie game, woman is King (or rather, Queen). http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/04/18/older_women_game_more/ i disagree about the minimal representation thing. i know lots of women who play mmos. In RL I never met any womenIn RL I never met any women who like computer games. Not being sexist, is just my own experience. oh, well i play. daughteroh, well i play. daughter plays. daughter-in-law plays. friend that introduced me to THE REALM and Everquest, was a female. we're all mmorpg fans. and all heterosexuals, so it isn't likely it's because we are lesbians or something. :D some women don't mention that they are women when playing mmos, to avoid harrassment. a survey done by Sony, several years ago, revealed that at least fifty percent of Everquest MMORPG players were female. Today, however, the surveys all claim that number was more like 15 percent. i don't believe that 15% for one minute. :) anyway, it's really hard to break into mmorpg making as a female. the guys all tend to huddle together and brainstorm and leave us lady types out in the rain trying to get a clue. so i don't mention i'm female because i don't want that to effect whether or not someone is willing to assist and answer questions. wubi ubuntu makes the fan on my computer do odd things. like start and stop repeatedly, whooosh, whir, whoosh, whir. it's irritating. it's not like it's having to share ram with windows. it isn't. you go to it at the boot screen for the computer, not from the windows desktop. i'm on windows right now. i'm taking this very slowly to keep the thing from crashing on me again. anyway, back to wubi. and i'm on wubi. see newand i'm on wubi. see new thread. :) not exactly, no, but nownot exactly, no, but now that you mention it, i guess it means change directory. :D the navigation command? linux is updating. apparently they removed java support on one of the things or left it out, anyway, which apparently had something to do with make. at least another hour, probably closer to 1 1/2 hours, before it's done installing. i put the silly file right on my desktop, btw. so i could find it easier. it's really quite unfriendly that the thing doesn't know where the cursor is at the moment. i guess that's how they keep it safer, since it doesn't know where it is, it's harder to write nasty viruses or break into the system, though i doubt even that will deter a dedicated hacker hey, this thing gives mehey, this thing gives me remote access to my windows. i can surf right to the folder where i have 3dmud saved on windows. when i open the swlpc folder on there, it doesn't give me a box to type in, however. and the fan kicks on because it has just loaded my entire windows when i surf there, which means its using 2 times the ram. so i still need to install 3dclient.exe on this linux. i have it downloaded, but need a way to open windows exes still. don't want to use the one on my windows due to the ram issue. anyway, hope wine works. |
